Part Two: Historical and Iconographic Overview
The Companhia do Nyassa (Nyassa Company) was one of the three great chartered companies that administered Portuguese East Africa (modern-day Mozambique). Granted a royal charter in 1891, the company held administrative and commercial rights over the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado and Niassa.
Historically, the company was notorious for its reliance on the "chibalo" system—a form of forced labor—and its inability to generate profit through traditional infrastructure. To bridge the deficit, the company turned to the philatelic market. They commissioned the world-renowned London firm Waterlow & Sons to produce high-quality, aesthetically stunning stamps designed specifically to appeal to European collectors. This 1921 issue was part of a major set that replaced earlier surcharged issues, showcasing the company's shift toward a permanent, high-art postal identity just eight years before its charter was terminated in 1929.
